The hunting industry is going through hard times with the CWD.

For the past 20 years Los Cuernos de Tejas Big Game Contest has supported the hunting industry.

Due to the tragic out break Los Cuernos de Tejas Big Game Contest WILL NOT be receiving or scoring AT RISK released deer this hunting season.

 


***Important Dates***

All Animals (Bucks, Spikes, Does, Hogs, Turkeys) Must Be Harvested And Scored During The Seasons Listed Below.

Important Note:
If Animals Are Scored By Another Texas Big Game Scorer, All Information Including Copy of Official Score Sheet and Picture Must be Received no later than by the day after the South Texas Closing Date (1/17/16).

  1. CONTESTANT MUST ENTER THE LOS CUERNOS DE TEJAS BIG GAME BEFORE THE ANIMAL IS HARVESTED TO WIN AN AWARD.
     
  2. ALL DEER, WILD HOGS & TURKEY SUBMITTED FOR ENTRY IN LOS CUERNOS DE TEJAS BIG GAME CONTEST MUST BE HARVESTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE RULES & REGULATIONS OF TEXAS PARKS & WILDLIFE.
     
  3. ALL DEER MUST BE SCORED BY AN OFFICIAL LOS CUERNOS DE TEJAS SCORER, TEXAS BIG GAME AWARDS SCORER OR A BOONE & CROCKETT SCORER. OFFICIAL SCORERS ARE DETERMINED BY THE BOARD OF THE LOS CUERNOS DE TEJAS BIG GAME CONTEST. ALL ANIMALS (BUCKS, SPIKES, DOES, HOGS, & TURKEYS) MUST BE HARVESTED AND SCORED DURING THE HUNTING SEASON AS FOLLOWS.

    NO ENTRIES ACCEPTED FOR ANIMALS HARVESTED DURING THE LATE GENERAL SEASON
     
  4. DEER WILL BE SCORED AT Circle V IN CARRIZO SPRINGS, TEXAS DURING NORMAL BUSINESS HOURS. PLEASE CALL TO NOTIFY US OF YOUR ARRIVAL 830-876-5354. WHEN AN ANIMAL COMES INTO THE CONTEST HEADQUARTERS TO BE SCORED OR WEIGHED, ALL INFORMATION PROVIDED BY THE HUNTER MUST BE CORRECT. IT IS THE HUNTER’S CHOICE TO DECIDE IF THEY WANT THE RANCH NAME TO BE POSTED. NO ANIMAL WILL BE SCORED OR WEIGHED ON THANKSGIVING DAY, CHRISTMAS DAY OR NEW YEAR’S DAY. WE WILL NOT RESCORE ANY ANIMAL THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN SCORED BY AN OFFICIAL CERTIFIED TEXAS BIG GAME AWARDS SCORER OR A BOONE & CROCKETT SCORER. LOS CUERNOS DE TEJAS MUST BE NOTIFIED BY PHONE, E-MAIL OR FAX THAT A TROPHY WAS MEASURED BY AN APPROVED MEASURER AT A LOCATION OTHER THAN Circle V. A COPY OF THE SCORE SHEET AND PHOTOGRAPH OF THE HUNTER WITH HIS OR HER TROPHY MUST BE PROVIDED TO LOS CUERNOS DE TEJAS WITHIN TWENTY FOUR HOURS AFTER CLOSING DAY.
     
  5. ANY DEER BROUGHT IN “IN VELVET” OR WITH "VELVET" INTACT WILL BE SUBJECT TO A 3% DEDUCTION IN ORDER TO BE ENTERED IN THE CONTEST. IF THE HUNTER CHOOSES HE MAY HAVE THE VELVET “SCRAPED” OR “REMOVED” AND WILL NOT BE SUBJECT TO THE 3% DEDUCTION.
     
  6. ALL HARVESTED WILD HOGS WILL BE WEIGHED AT Circle V, October 3, 2015- January 17, 2016.
     
  7. IF A HUNTER SHOULD QUALIFY TO WIN AN AWARD IN MORE THAN ONE CATEGORY THE BOARD OF LOS CUERNOS DE TEJAS WILL CHOOSE INTO WHICH CATEGORY HIS OR HER TROPHY WILL BE ENTERED. IF A TROPHY IS INITIALLY ENTERED INTO A GIVEN CATEGORY THE BOARD MAY CHOOSE TO MOVE HIS OR HER TROPHY TO A DIFFERENT CATEGORY AT ANY TIME DURING THE CONTEST (DURING THE 2015-2016 TEXAS WHITE-TAILED DEER HUNTING SEASON). A TROPHY CAN BE A WINNER IN ONLY ONE CATEGORY. HUNTER MAY ONLY ENTER THE NUMBER OF DEER ALLOWED BY THE COUNTY IN WHICH THE HUNTER IS HUNTING.
     
  8. LOW FENCE: MUST HAVE AT LEAST 1,500 YARDS OR 1/4 OF TOTAL PERIMETER FENCE THAT DOES NOT HAVE A 7-FOOT HIGH, OR A HIGHER FENCE, OR ANY FENCE THAT COULD BE CONSIDERED "CAPTIVE" TO WHITE-TAILED DEER.
     
  9. HIGH FENCE: MUST CONTAIN ALL FOUR SIDES, WITH 7 FEET IN HEIGHT OR MORE, OR ANY FENCE THAT COULD BE CONSIDERED CAPTIVE TO WHITE-TAILED DEER WITHIN THE PERIMETER.
     
  10. ALL BUCKS MUST HAVE THE CAPE ATTACHED TO THE HEAD.
     
  11. OPEN CATEGORY - "DELETED FOR 2015-16 HUNTING SEASON."
     
  12. ENTRIES HARVESTED DURING THE FIRST PART OF THE MANAGED LAND DEER PROGRAM (MLDP) PRIOR TO THE GENERAL SEASON AND DURING THE REGULAR TEXAS HUNTING SEASON CAN COMPETE IN THE DIFFERENT CATEGORIES WHERE THEIR HARVEST QUALIFIES.
     
  13. IN ALL WEIGHT CATEGORIES THE ANIMAL'S CARCASS WILL BE WEIGHED “DRESSED.” “DRESSED” IS DEFINED AS THE ENTIRE CARCASS WITH ALL ENTRAILS REMOVED INCLUDING HEART, LIVER, LUNGS, ETC. ALL ANIMALS MUST BE WEIGHED AT Circle V. TESTICLES DO NOT HAVE TO BE REMOVED.
     
  14. WINNERS IN ALL BUCK CATEGORIES ARE REQUIRED TO DISPLAY THEIR TROPHIES AT THE ANNUAL AWARDS CEREMONY TO RECEIVE THEIR PRIZE. WINNERS OF WEIGHT CATEGORIES ARE ENCOURAGED TO BRING A MOUNT OF THEIR WINNING ANIMAL OR PHOTO TO BE DISPLAYED AT THE AWARDS CEREMONY. WINNERS WITH REASONABLE EXCEPTIONS NEED TO BE APPROVED BEFORE THE AWARDS CEREMONY MARCH 26, 2016.
     
  15. CONTEST DIRECTORS RESERVE THE RIGHT TO RE-MEASURE ANY ENTRY. DIRECTORS HAVE THE POWER TO REVERSE THE DECISION.
     
  16. BUCKS KILLED BY A BOW ARE NOT RESTRICTED TO THE ARCHERY DIVISION. CROSSBOWS DO NOT QUALIFY AS A BOW AND ARROW.
     
  17. ALL REFERENCES TO “DEER” REFER TO WHITE-TAILED DEER ONLY.
     
  18. TO BE CONSIDERED IN THE YOUTH DIVISION THE HUNTER MUST HARVEST HIS OR HER ANIMAL WITH A YOUTH HUNTING LICENSE.
     
  19. LOS CUERNOS DE TEJAS HAS THE RIGHT TO DISQUALIFY ANY TROPHY ANIMAL THAT WAS NOT HARVESTED BY A FAIR CHASE.
     
  20. IN THE EVENT OF A TIE, THE EARLIER PAID ENTRY WILL BE DECLARED AS THE WINNER.
     
  21. DIRECTORS DECISIONS ARE FINAL!
     
  22. ALL CATEGORY WINNERS MUST BE PRESENT TO RECEIVE PRIZES, OR HAVE MADE ARRANGEMENTS PRIOR TO THE AWARDS CEREMONY. WINNERS THAT REQUEST SHIPPING OF THEIR PRIZES WILL BE AT THE HUNTERS EXPENSE. PRIZES NOT CLAIMED AFTER 6 MONTHS FOLLOWING THE AWARDS CEREMONY WILL BE FORFEITED.

  2. BEST BUCK OVERALL - HIGH FENCE:

    THE DEER CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. THE WINNER IS DETERMINED BY THE GROSS SCORE.
     
  3. BEST BUCK OVERALL - OPEN:
     
    "DELETED FOR 2015-16 HUNTING SEASON."
     
  4. BEST BUCK OVERALL - WOMEN’S:
     
    THE DEER CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. THE WINNER MUST BE AN ADULT FEMALE, AND IS DETERMINED BY THE GROSS SCORE.
     
  5. BEST ARCHERY BUCK:
     
    THE DEER CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. IT MUST BE HARVESTED BY A BOW. CROSSBOWS DO NOT QUALIFY AS A BOW AND ARROW. THE WINNER IS DETERMINED BY THE GROSS SCORE. THE DEER THAT ARE HARVESTED ARE NOT RESTRICTED TO THE ARCHERY DIVISION.
     
  6. BEST TOTAL NINE POINT BUCK:
     
    THE DEER CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. THE WINNER IS DETERMINED BY THE GROSS SCORE. THE DEER MUST BE DETERMINED BY THE OFFICIAL SCORER TO HAVE NINE TYPICAL AND OR NON-TYPICAL POINTS. IF A TINE IS BROKEN, IT IS THE DECISION OF THE OFFICIAL SCORER TO DETERMINE ITS ELIGIBILITY.
     
  7. BEST TOTAL EIGHT POINT BUCK:
     
    THE DEER CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. THE WINNER IS DETERMINED BY THE GROSS SCORE. THE DEER MUST BE DETERMINED BY THE OFFICIAL SCORER TO HAVE EIGHT TYPICAL AND OR NON-TYPICAL POINTS. IF A TINE IS BROKEN, IT IS THE DECISION OF THE OFFICIAL SCORER TO DETERMINE ITS ELIGIBILITY.
     
  8. BEST TOTAL SEVEN POINT BUCK:
     
    THE DEER CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. THE WINNER IS DETERMINED BY THE GROSS SCORE. THE DEER MUST BE DETERMINED BY THE OFFICIAL SCORER TO HAVE SEVEN TYPICAL AND OR NON-TYPICAL POINTS. IF A TINE IS BROKEN, IT IS THE DECISION OF THE OFFICIAL SCORER TO DETERMINE ITS ELIGIBILITY.
     
  9. BEST TOTAL SIX POINT BUCK:
     
    THE DEER CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. THE WINNER IS DETERMINED BY THE GROSS SCORE. THE DEER MUST BE DETERMINED BY THE OFFICIAL SCORER TO HAVE SIX TYPICAL AND OR NON-TYPICAL POINTS. IF A TINE IS BROKEN, IT IS THE DECISION OF THE OFFICIAL SCORER TO DETERMINE ITS ELIGIBILITY.
     
  10. BEST SPIKE:
     
    THE DEER CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. THE DEER MUST NOT HAVE MORE THAN TWO MAIN BEAMS EACH OF INDIVIDUAL ORIGIN AND NO EVIDENCE OF HAVING A POINT BROKEN OR REMOVED. THE TOTAL LENGTH OF BOTH ANTLERS DETERMINES THE WINNER.
     
  11. LONGEST DROP TINE:
     
    THE DEER CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. TO BE CONSIDERED A DROP TINE, THE TINE MUST ORIGINATE FROM THE BOTTOM HALF OF THE MAIN BEAM. FINAL VERIFICATION OF THE DROP TINE WILL BE MADE BY THE OFFICIAL SCORER.
     
  12. WIDEST INSIDE SPREAD:
     
    THE DEER CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. INSIDE SPREAD WILL BE USED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER.
     
  13. MOST POINTS:
     
    THE DEER CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. IF A TINE IS BROKEN IT IS THE DECISION OF THE OFFICIAL SCORER TO DETERMINE ITS ELIGIBILITY.
     
  14. HEAVIEST MASS:
     
    THE DEER CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. THE OFFICIAL BOONE AND CROCKETT MASS SCORE WILL BE USED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER.
     
  15. HEAVIEST BUCK:
     
    THE DEER CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. DEER MUST BE WEIGHED IN AT Circle V, October 3, 2015 - January 17, 2016.
     
  16. HEAVIEST DOE:
     
    THE DEER CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. DEER MUST BE WEIGHED IN AT Circle V, October 3, 2015 - January 17, 2016. A DOE WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE SEX OF THE ANIMAL, REGARDLESS OF ANTLERS. IN THE CASE OF A HERMAPHRODITE ANIMAL (BOTH SEXES IN ONE ANIMAL), THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS WILL DECIDE INTO WHICH CATEGORY THE ANIMAL WILL BE PLACED.
     
  17. HEAVIEST HARVESTED WILD HOG:
     
    THE WILD HOG MUST BE FREE RANGING IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. HOGS MUST BE WEIGHED IN AT Circle V, October 3, 2015 - January 17, 2016.
     
  18. SENIOR CITIZEN DIVISION:
     
    THE ENTRY CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. ANY ANIMAL HARVESTED BY AN 80 YEAR OLD OR OLDER MALE OR FEMALE IS ELIGIBLE FOR A LOS CUERNOS DE TEJAS JACKET.

  1. BEST BUCK OVERALL - LOW FENCE:

    REFER TO RULE #1 IN THE ADULT CATEGORY. THE HUNTER MUST HOLD A TEXAS YOUTH HUNTING LICENSE.
     
  2. BEST BUCK OVERALL - HIGH FENCE:

    REFER TO RULE #2 IN THE ADULT CATEGORY. THE HUNTER MUST HOLD A TEXAS YOUTH HUNTING LICENSE.

    THE ENTRY CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. ANY ANIMAL HARVESTED & BROUGHT IN BY AN 8 YEAR OLD OR YOUNGER MALE OR FEMALE IS ELIGIBLE FOR A LOS CUERNOS DE TEJAS JACKET.


ADULT / YOUTH CATEGORY RULES

  1. PHOTO CONTEST:

    ANY ADULT OR YOUTH CONTESTANT MUST BE ENTERED IN THE Los Cuernos Contest. LIMIT... 2 PHOTOS PER CONTESTANT. ALL PHOTOS MUST BE DELIVERED TO Los Cuernos Contest EITHER BY MAIL OR IN PERSON. COLOR OR BLACK & WHITE PHOTOS MUST BE SUBMITTED ON 8X10 PHOTO PAPER, GLOSSY OR MATTE, NOT FRAMED. ONLY AUTHENTIC WILDLIFE PHOTOS WILL BE ACCEPTED. PHOTOS MUST INCLUDE NAME, ADDRESS AND AGE ON BACK. PHOTOS CAN BE TAKEN AT ANY TIME OF YEAR (Jan 1, 2015 - Jan 17, 2016), BUT CANNOT BE SUBMITTED BEFORE THE OPENING OF TEXAS ARCHERY SEASON AND THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION IS THE CLOSING OF THE SOUTH TEXAS GENERAL SEASON. WINNER WILL BE NOTIFIED WITHIN ONE WEEK AFTER SEASON CLOSING. ALL PHOTOS BECOME PROPERTY OF Los Cuernos AND WILL NOT BE RETURNED.
     
  2. TURKEY - LONGEST BEARD:

    THE TURKEY CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. ALL BEARDS WILL BE MEASURED BY AN OFFICIAL LOS CUERNOS SCORER. IN THE CASE OF DOUBLE BEARDED TURKEYS THE LONGEST BEARD WILL BE THE OFFICIAL ENTRY.
     
  3.     JACKET BUCK

    170+:     LOW FENCE  -  THE BUCK CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. THE WINNER IS DETERMINED BY THE GROSS SCORE.

    180+:     HIGH FENCE  -  THE BUCK CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. THE WINNER IS DETERMINED BY THE GROSS SCORE.

    200+:     OPEN         "DELETED FOR 2015-16 HUNTING SEASON."
